Who are we?
The NDG Community Committee on Elder Abuse is a non-profit registered organization, established in 1990, and is composed of volunteers, community groups, students and agencies that are concerned about seniors and their well-being.
Mission
Our mission is to collaboratively provide information, resources and educational programs to help eliminate and prevent elder abuse and neglect.
Objective
Our objective is to empower seniors with the knowledge and tools to ensure their safety as well as to prevent isolation and abusive situations.
Activities
One of the NDGCCEA's primary avenues of achieving these goals is through the design and implementation of community projects. On-going activities of the Committee include:
a) providing public presentations and training on elder abuse to health and social service organizations, community groups, schools, religious organizations and businesses in the community;
b) designing and implementing programs in seniors’ residences and centres to empower seniors with the knowledge and tools to ensure their safety as well as to prevent isolation and abusive situations;
c) sponsoring monthly meetings that bring together senior citizens and organizations who serve the elderly to discuss various issues related to ageism;
d) linking with provincial and national organizations that lobby on behalf of older adults who are victims of abuse or neglect;
e) producing educational material about elder abuse/ageism.
Income
Sources of income for the NDGCCEA include private donations and grants from local and provincial and federal government agencies for specific projects.
Board of directors
Our board is comprised of volunteers (mostly seniors), social workers, Health and Community Care workers, students, a bank representative, a crime prevention officer, and representatives from other organizations involved with the issues of elder abuse.
Chair and management
The Board of Directors is currently chaired by Daphne Nahmiash, Ph.D. Professionally, Dr. Nahmiash served as a part-time consultant for the CSSS Cavendish, was the Director of Professional Services of the CLSC NDG/Montreal-Ouest, was a Professor in the Social Work department at the University of Laval, and has worked in a variety of social work and management positions over the past 40 years. She has authored and co-authored many publications dealing with elder abuse, and has travelled extensively, presenting research papers, teaching and organizing intervention projects. She has also contributed to many book chapters and scientific articles covering such topics as home care, violence, caregiving and the empowerment of seniors. Currently, she serves as the Chairperson of the NDGCCEA, volunteers on several other committees and continues to write and perform research in the area of elder abuse.
Charter status
The NDGCCEA has been incorporated according to the Companies Act of Quebec registered on November 8, 1993. It is a non-profit organization and is recognized as a Charity organization.
